Top 10 Rifles & Shotguns for Prepping and Defense

There are several factors that form the selection of these guns including the cost, ammo, reliability, round and capacity. First I will start off with cost saving guns that can be used by peppers and home defenders. In my opinion firearms should not be used in a survival situation to produce food because no matter what whether it is a 10,000 rounds you have or 6 you will run out. I recommend using renewable resources for hunting like bows, spears and fishing poles.

The 702 Plinkster has its it doubters but it is a 22 low recoil, magazine fed rifle for between $100-$150. It beats the Ruger 10/22 because of cost. While you can't give it a cool body your target won't be able to tell.
10. The 702 Plinkster $100-$150

The advantage to this black-powder Uberti 1858 reproduction Revolving Carbine is you can make your own ammo and keep extra loaded cylinders. The downsides are the cost at $500-$600 and that the only way to safely Shoot it is with a double handed pistol grip.

9. Uberti 1858 Revolving Carbine $500-$600
The ASI pump action PASi1 12ga does what pump action shotguns do push pellets down range. The advantage though is the cost at $130-$150.

8. ASI pump action PASi1 12ga $130-$150

The CETME is a Spanish production of the German G-3. It fires 7.62 NATO also known as .308, has 30 round magazines and H&K function for a bargain.

7. CETME $400-$700

The Circuit Judge is a rifle and a shotgun being able to shoot .410 and 45 Long Cult with tight groups.

6. Circuit Judge $500-$650

The SU-16D is a great design by Kel-Tec that borrows most of it's thrills from the AR-15. It takes AR/M-16 magazines and is chambered in .223. It has lots of rails to allow easy scope and laser installation.

5. The SU-16D $550-$650

The CT-9 G2 is carbine that shoots 9mm produced by Taurus in Brazil. While importation laws only allow 10 round magazines to be imported there are various conversion methods for other 30 and 40 round magazines. It also comes with nice sights and plenty of rails.

4. CT-9 G2 $400-$600

The SUB-2000 by Kel-Tec has good sights, folds for easy storage, fires 9mm, has high capacity magazines available and normally go for $400-$550.

3. SUB-2000 $400-$550

The VZ-58 looks like an AK but it is not and in fact none of the parts or even magazines are inter changeable. It is the Czech military's improvements to the AK, fires 7.62x39mm, has high capacity mags available and the biggest plus is that it has a shorter dust cover. What that means is the bolt is the top of the gun and a casing can eject from 3 sides while a round is chambered by a heavier bolt. The bolt design also makes this gun a much straighter shooter than an AK.

2. VZ-58 $600-$900

The Tavor is a nice bullpup with high capacity mags often AR. It is very accurate and does not weigh a lot.

Top 10 Handguns for Prepping and Home Defense

There are several factors that form the selection of these guns including the cost, ammo, reliability, round capacity and concealment. First I will start off with cost saving guns that can be used by peppers and home defenders. I my opinion firearms should not be used in a survival situation to produce food because no matter what whether it is a 10,000 rounds you have or 6 you will run out. I recommend using renewable resources for hunting like bows, spears and fishing poles.

10. Pheonix HP 22 $100-$140.

9. Cobra Freedom 380 $100-$130

This pistol is a real steal of it's price and it's stainless steal body make it low maintenance. It also has low recoil and light ammo. The only down side is it's extra safety features. There are instructions found on YouTube a various sites to modify the pistol and remove the safety features making it operate like a normal pistol.

The Cobra Freedom 380 is another inexpensive pistol for preppers and home defense. The gun is a  heavier caliber than the last pistol. The grip is not that bad and it could be carried. The main issues are that it is made of pot metal making it heavy and fry firing can break the firing pin. For this reason you should order an extra firing pin.
8. High Point 9mm $120-$180

The HighPonit 9mm is heavy, ugly and is heavy. However it is cheap, reliable with a lifetime warranty, is accurate and is 9mm.

8. High Point 9mm $120-$180

7. Tisas 1911 $399-$500

It is a very basic GI 1911 but you can't beat the price with the 45 ACP caliber. It is reliable, accurate and cheaper. It's only flaw is the trigger because it is a stock 1911 trigger unlike the $1000+ 1911's out there with pro triggers.

The Canik 9mm is well made and cheap. It comes with a case and holster.

6. Canik TP9SA $300-$400

5. Black Powder Revolvers $300-$400
Numerous companies no make firing replicas of black powder revolvers. They have the advantage of being able to make the black powder and to cast the bullets to fire them.

4. Taurus Judge $400-$550

The Taurus Judge is an interesting gun in that it is a shotgun pistol that is not an NFA item. The gun also fires 45 Long Colt.

3. 5/7 $1100-$1500

The 5/7 gets its name from the special rounds it shoots. It holds 20 rounds that are essentially a carbine round. The down sides are the cost, cost of ammo and availability of ammo.

The 357 Magnum Desert Eagle is powerful, semiautomatic and more practical than the 50 caliber version. The only downside is the cost.

2. Desert Eagle 357 magnum $1400-$1600

1. PMR-30 $399-$500
The PMR-30 is number 1 because of it's price, 22 magnum ammo (only slightly less powerful than the 5/7), 30 round magazines, accuracy, reliability and light weight even loaded. It is a concealable fighting gun that qualifies a personal defense weapon.
